You have probably heard the joke: “Women always want to know what men are thinking. But men AREN’T thinking!” It’s more funny than true.
One friend says, “Men are thinking, just not about women all the time. They’re not obsessing about the relationship.” More true, less funny.
And some men, and women, have learned to keep their mouth shut to avoid getting shot down. So, when you ask what they are thinking, you are apt to get, “Nothing.”
Two things:
~ We can offer a partner a safe place to think (and speak), if we neither judge nor punish.
~ And that’s easier when we recognize that whatever our partner is thinking, is more about them than it is about us.
We will be happier if we don’t personalize what a partner (or anybody else) thinks. And, hey, that holds true for what they say and do, as well.
