Dear Friends: Be less interesting and more interested

If you want to intrigue people, be interesting to them. If you want to love people, be interested in them.

People don’t need another somebody to one-up them. They need somebody to believe in them. They need somebody to take the time to see and know the good in them. Ultimately, they need to see and know the good in them selves. And while you cannot see it for them, you can highlight it for them.

So, the next time you see somebody in the elevator, discern the good in him, and say it out loud. And the next time you encounter that colleague who puts on a false front, instead of judging him, recognize that he is trying to prove his worth.

Give people a safe place to be authentic. Let them know that you identify with them. Validate what’s good in them, rather than judge their means of coping.

And start with you. If you know you are enough, you won’t try so hard to produce evidence with an interesting life. You can be more interested than interesting. You can be known for love, rather than ego.

Love smiles,
