Maybe you’ve disappointed yourself by asking for what you wanted. Getting what you want feels different when you have to ask for it. But maybe you got impatient. Maybe you got scared you wouldn’t get it. Maybe you were just trying to be honest.
As soon as we ask, we forfeit the joy we feel when somebody surprises us with exactly what we wanted, without our asking for it. And, perhaps, we also rob somebody of the freedom to give without provocation, and the satisfaction of knowing they didn’t feel obligated. So when do we ask? Does love ever ask?
We ask when our motivation is pure, without expectation. We ask when we can do so without any impatience or fear, and with no agenda lurking behind our honesty. We ask when we can be content with asking, regardless of the result.
